Ginger: a new market for Brazil

Ginger is a rhizome of Asian origin, mainly from India and China, and its cultivation dates back more than 2000 years. There are reports that it was introduced in Brazil by the Portuguese about a century after the discovery. It is a highly used and valued product for its numerous applications, such as: essences, beverages and confectionery products.

Growing production across the country

In Brazil, its production is concentrated in the State of Espírito Santo, but other regions deserve attention, among them the coastal strip of Santa Catarina and Paraná, in the south of São Paulo and more recently Minas Gerais, made mainly by small farmers. The capixabas, who lead the planting, reached record numbers in 2020, production reached 33.6 thousand tons, an increase of 7 thousand tons compared to last year. According to the largest exporter of the product Wanderley Sthur: “In 20 years we have never had a harvest like this year. Better: the market is absorbing this production and the price reaches R$150.00 paid to the producer.”

Growth in the international market

This excellent result is mainly due to problems in the crop of our biggest competitor, China. This drop opened space for the Brazilian market to infiltrate the main consumer markets: the United States, Canada and Europe, especially England and the Netherlands.

The importance of an international consultancy

Ginger is very hot in the international market today and it is a great time for its producers to seek to internationalize their product. However, this process requires a lot of care and study. Therefore, it is essential to count on the support of an international consultancy such as Prisma. We can help you more safely and efficiently walk the path for your business to reach the whole world.
