Green hydrogen: Brazilian bet on the green market

With the urgency to combat climate change, the search for new energy sources that can reduce the share of fossil fuels grows, thus reducing carbon dioxide emissions. As society's demand for energy would not fall along with the reduction in the use of these fuels, it is necessary to find more environmentally friendly substitutes; and that's where renewable energies come in.

Renewable energies are gaining space and strength in the public debate in recent years

According to CNN Brasil, Brazil is one of the reference countries in the use of renewable sources in its electricity matrix. Data from 2020 from the Ministry of Mines and Energy show that just over 80% of the matrix is renewable. The share in the country is higher than the global average: in 2019, renewables had around 25% of share in the world electricity matrix and less than 15% in energy, while in the Brazilian case, the share is 83% and 46%, respectively. (International Energy Agency).

Green hydrogen emerges as a strong candidate to replace fossil fuels

Recently, green hydrogen has gained space and attention in this process. This type of hydrogen is considered the "energy of the future", with potential for use in several areas, and Brazil has conditions to benefit from this new trend - both for generation for the domestic and foreign markets. Export capacity is further enhanced by the proximity to large potential consumer markets, such as Europe and the United States.

Brazil emerges as a country with great potential in this market, both producer and exporter.

It is in this sense that the Export Processing Zone (ZPE) of the Port of Pecém, in Ceará, already plans to have a zone dedicated exclusively to house hydrogen-producing factories. According to Eduardo Neves, president of the ZPE, “the idea is that the hydrogen remains in a tax-free area, and that the tubes leave the ZPE directly to the port so that it can be exported”.

With this in mind, it can be concluded that not only hydrogen but several other emerging renewable energy sources represent a promising bet for the coming years. Thus, for an assertive international insertion, the performance of a consultancy is essential, for example, to identify the best destination for export.
